Now for the answer:

A supplement that I think is very important to have is fish oil.  You can pick fish oil capsules up at any GNC or health food store and they do an amazing job in helping you to regenerate your skin, hair, and muscle tissue.   Fish oil also helps you with joints and ligaments, by making sure that the synovial fluids are flowing which will ease joint pain and help you in your workouts.  Fish oil is also known to help with cognitive thinking and reasoning so it's definitely an all-around plus to make sure you are getting a serving of fish oil each day.

Another supplement you want to take a look at is conjugated linoleic acid or CLA.  It's awesome.  It's a natural essential fatty acid that can be found in trace amounts in red meat and dairy products.  Studies have shown that CLA can assist in glucose metabolism, maintain or even build lean muscle and burn more fat even while you sleep.

Another thing that I do is to make sure that I always get in a good multivitamin.  I use various brands throughout the month and they are good for making sure that you are getting all of the nutrients you need on top of all the greens and vegetables you are eating.

I also just started using DHEA 50.  I'm turning 41 and I'm finding that my body doesn't bounce back as quickly as it used to when I was 25.  So DHEA is purported to boost your natural hormone production to help you with your thyroid and metabolism, lose weight, burn fat, build lean muscle tissue, help with regeneration of hair and skin and just about everything else.

How Much Protein Do I Need When I Work Out?

This is a common question we get here at Ballistic Body Fitness.  In order to answer this question and give you more information on what nutritional supplements you should consider when working out, we shot a new video that we just uploaded today.

On to the answer:

Now during the 90 day fitness challenge, there are a lot of supplements that can be taken to help you along your way to get fitter, healthier and to help you lose that weight safely.  There are a few nutritional supplements that I always use and I recommend them to clients because they are part of that "A-list" that that really magnify your results.

One of them is always going to be a good protein shake.  Now there are a lot of great protein shakes that are out on the market today.  I will try different brands from time to time and a great protein shake will help you get in that daily recommended dose of protein that you are looking for.

Some fitness experts suggest from 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per projected pound of body weight.  The way that works is let's say you want to weigh 200 pounds,   then you would want to eat 2 grams of protein for each pound that you want to weigh which would mean a total of 400 grams of protein per day.  I don't think most people need that much protein.  This recommendation is more for someone who is a professional bodybuilder and is really trying to put on some muscle mass.

For someone like me who is trying to lose weight and maintain or put on a little bit of muscle mass, I would shoot for a much lower amount of daily protein.  I usually target from 1 gram per pound of bodyweight to 1.75 grams per pound of bodyweight.  I find that this range works best for me and my body.

Since I'm trying to go from 250 pounds down to 200 pounds, I am going to shoot for 200 grams of protein per day.  This protein powder helps me get that because each serving is going to be about 44 grams of protein so two shakes per day will help me knock out 88 grams of that protein.  Supplementing with a high-quality protein powder also makes my life easier because I would have to eat a lot of whole food to replace the 88 grams of protein in these two simple shakes.
